	Challenge
For COLORFUL 3, we needed to create a distinct visual identity targeting BIPOC designers, differentiating it from previous designs. During the second check-in meeting, a newly launched event’s visuals clashed with our project direction, forcing us to revise the creative approach from scratch.

	Outcome
Despite the setback, we successfully delivered the revamped identity in under 20 days, earning client praise and contributing to a nearly 50% increase in participation for COLORFUL 3.

Look Back Through Fog  is a web-based data sculpture project run by t-SNE machine learning algorithm and creative coding, aims to create an emotional data experience and mobilize an aesthetics of “blur” to display how we as the public get close to the truth of conflicts through fog of overwhelming information, fog of history, fog of war. This data-driven project narrates life and death at scale caused by conflicts in the past 30 years using the dataset called 
UCDP (Uppsala Conflict Data Program). It builds a space to take the audiences to rethink and evoke discourses on the cost of conflicts in digital and physical forms.

	The concept comes from a term, “Fog of War”, it was introduced by Carl von Clausewitz in his book, Vom Kriege (1832), which means “the uncertainty in situational awareness experienced by participants in military operations”. I want to give the audience a similar feeling of “Fog” to experience the difficulity to get to the truth through the fog of history, information, and concepts.

	The sculpture is displayed on a standing screen, people could explore through the fog by using a touchpad. 
Each dot represent a conflict event.&#38;nbsp; Each dot is followed by a text which is the war name of the conflict event.
And it is based online, so people could experience it on website.

	I took 18 countries with the highest number of deaths as samples and used the same algorithm to generate 18 data sculptures. Every sculpture records the war memory in different countries during last 30 years. 
The shapes of fog reveal the death number by conflicts in different countries. Some of them are large which means there are more people died there, some of them have quite strange shape and protruding parts which means thousands of people lost their lives in one battle.

	T-SNE algrithm is a machine learning method to reduce high data dimensions to low data dimensions. With t-SNE, it becomes possible to visualize high dimentional data set with scatter plot visualization by x, y, and z position. Each data point’s position is calculated by more than 20 attributes, such as solider death number, people death number, battel spot longitude, altitude, duration time, battle type, etc. Computer will place spots based on the information included by the event&#38;nbsp; When the data points is closer, it represents that they are more relative in the perspective of machine learning.
Every time we use t-SNE to calculate the position of each data point, the shape will change because of the stochastic calculus. "Human Response" is an interactive solo exhibit by artist/designer Rich Tu about processing grief in the era of artificial intelligence. It consists of large-scale typographic works, augmented reality, and an animated film. All aspects of the exhibit were part of a complex custom spatial build, including a sensory deprivation viewing box as the gallery centerpiece.

Colorful Type Display
	COLORFUL is a first-of-its-kind grant and awards program for emerging creatives from BIPOC communities, with a focus on industry inclusivity, creating new financial opportunities, and eliminating entry barriers for elite competitions. In its third year, Sunday Afternoon partnered with The One Club for Creativity and collaborated with Tré Seals of Vocal Type Foundry on an energetic campaign identity, featuring a custom typeface inspired by spectrums of light.

	THE MOTH Interactive Logo
	Inspired by The Moth's origin—stories shared on warm nights as moths flocked towards the porch light and the stories—The Pop Up Porch is a custom-built home fitted with a tiny porch designed for sharing and listening to stories traveling through the American South. On the "porch," over 5,000 people gathered to learn about The Moth, listen to stories from our archive, and participate in 1-on-1 story coaching sessions. In these sessions, members of The Moth's staff, including directors, producers, and instructors, used Moth-style storytelling techniques to help each person expand their experiences into stories.

We designed a dynamic logotype resembling the physical nature of a pop-up porch and expanded upon the shape creating a flexible system that can house images and content.More

Daydream is a new kind of software development company with a focus on developing a talent driven culture that favors human connection, intentional/deep work and motivation through curiosity over fear. While at Daydream, one is encouraged and empowered to nurture their curiosity, start their own projects and even their own company. CEO Thenuka Karunaratne tasked the Sunday Afternoon team with developing the strategy, naming, brand identity and website for the company. 

We designed a custom logotype based on a script representing flow and connection. We then pulled the thread and created a dynamic whimsical design system reflecting on what an actual Daydream feels like, where time stretches and sometimes feels like it's suspended, making space to house anything seemingly possible. Sunday Afternoon illustrator Peter Phobia then created line drawing illustrations living inside the logotype and representing the culture of the Daydream organization. The resulting whimsical and flexible identity system allows the word mark to constantly evolve and grow alongside Daydream by constantly reflecting their newest organizational pillars, trends and latest products.

	OutcomeThe creative brief was met, delivering a dynamic brand identity that evolves with Daydream and aligns with their talent-driven culture.
